St Mirren in the Community Easter Soccer Schools

More than 300 youngsters picked up new silky soccer skills as they were put through their paces at 5 venues across Paisley & Renfrewshire.

Assistant community coach at St Mirren Robert Campbell said: "It's been magic.

"The Monday and Tuesday was a bad start weather-wise but the kids just battled through it and the numbers have been as high as they have been for a few years.

Robert revealed how a new coaching technique, with an emphasis in SAQ - speed, agility and quickness - helped the kids taking part to maximise their physical activity.

He said: "We put together a new community coaching manual a few months ago and all the coaches have been training up on it. Essentially, it's about SAQ - speed, agility and quickness. And it's been really well received."

Robert reckons there could be one or two future stars within the bunch of youngsters they've already been tutoring.

He revealed: "You would be daft not to see someone with ability and to be honest, there have been a few gems in there. In fact, we now have a development centre and some of the ones that we see potential in will be invited into it. Then it's up to them if they want to join us or not, but it's a very good opportunity."
