Football crazy Buddies joined forces with Rangers and Scotland star David Weir at Ferguslie Sports Centre to mark Scotland's participation in Uefa's "Grassroots Day" celebrations.

The 'Gers centre-half was only too happy to act as ambassador and get the day off to a winning start.

Weir, 40, who was recently named Scotland's Player of the Year, linked up with pupils from several Paisley schools, including St Andrew's Academy, Paisley Grammar, Castlehead High and Gleniffer High, to promote the scheme in Renfrew.

Also backing the initiative were pupils from Linwood High and Trinity High School.

And everyone had an absolute ball as they turned on the style to help promote grassroots football coaching.

Football events ran all across the country, with help and support from professional players and managers.

At Ferguslie, 200 boys and girls from local schools backed the scheme by taking part in a Bank of Scotland Soccer One Festival.

Rangers defender Weir was on hand to offer encouragement to the young players, pose for pictures and sign autographs.

Scottish FA West Regional Manager, Paul McNeill, said: "We were delighted to be taking part in the UEFA Grassroots Day celebrations. So much hard work goes into grassroots football across our region and the country. This was a great chance for the young players to get involved in a Europe-wide event and for us to showcase some of our on-going programmes."

The UEFA Grassroots Day was part of the build-up to the Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in Madrid.

All 53 member associations took part in the day.

It was held to celebrate the work going on at grassroots level across the continent.
